Audio Codecs – What are they?

Audio codecs are defined as software applications of hardware devices (with the same kind of software) that can compress audio files and then decompress them. In fact, the codecs used for compression and decompression work with opposite principles, but they are quite similar to each other in the manner of their working.

The formats used by audio formats are any applicable digital audio formats that are commonly used. For transmission over the Internet, codecs can also compress and convert files into streaming audio formats.

The word ‘codec’ is derived from coding-decoding, which is what a codec does. It first codes the digital data into a small compressed form and then plays back the data by reconverting it into the original form.

Audio Codecs – How do they work?

Audio codecs work with the principle of audio compression. This is a process of reducing the size of an audio file so that it is covered within as few bits of data as possible. The idea is to remove all unnecessary sound bits and bundle them into a smaller format so that they are compressed. When the file needs to be played back, a decoding system is put into play which can expand the files again so that they can be played.

Lossless and Lossy Audio Codecs

There are two types of compression that audio codecs can perform. Based on that, they are called as lossless and lossy audio codecs.

Lossless audio codecs retain a copy of the original audio files before converting them, so that any kind of qualitative or quantitative loss becomes reversible. However, this also increases the size of the file even after compression. It is difficult to have a lossless audio codec that can compress an audio file below 50 to 60% of its original size.

Lossy audio codecs are those that do not retain any previous information. They compress the audio to the smallest size possible and transmit them where they are decoded to a playable size. However, there is a danger of loss of data because of the fact that there is no backup created. The brighter side of this is that lossy audio compressed files are substantially smaller in size. These can easily compress the files to 5 to 20% of their original size.

Today, most audio codecs available in the market are of the lossy type. Though they will cause a deterioration of the quality of the file, they are good for online transmission and even storing on discs. For that reason, people prefer lossy audio codecs over the lossless ones.

Audio Codecs – The Tradeoff

There is always a compromise involved when audio codecs are used. It is not possible to predict in advance how these files will be compressed and whether they will play at good quality upon being decompressed or not. This is especially because most codecs used today are lossless. Though this becomes ideal for sending digitally compressed audio files over the Internet, they also mar the original quality of the recording. Hence, these audio codecs are used only sparingly and only in areas that really require them.

Dental management software becomes mandatory when your dental practice starts to grow. You need all the help you can get to manage the operational issues, as well as the business aspects of your dental practice. The management software will help you see the realities of your practice so that you can make timely business decisions. Here are some issues to consider when buying dental management software.

Dental management software endorsement.

Usually, new software requires a certain period of time to mature. Dental management software is no different. Features mature gradually and the software constantly evolves to cater to the needs of customers. In other words, the software must have been used, tested, and proven. If experts in the field start to endorse the product, it’s a good sign. Otherwise, contact the software vendor and ask if the software has been successfully deployed elsewhere. You may even want to go as far as contacting the other dental practices to ask for feedback.

Software setup and training.

Having tons of important features is a good thing. But if the software is so complicated that it takes a mountain of resources to implement, then perhaps it’s wise to assess other options. Dental management software should be easy to setup, and professional training must be provided. Sometimes, smaller software vendors lack the manpower resources to conduct proper training. So always check with the vendor before making a purchase. Training may cost you a little more money, but it’s crucial if you want a smooth integration.

Dental management software features assessment.

The features are there, but it’s ultimately up to you to decide if the features are going to be useful for your practice or not. You don’t want to spend thousands of dollars just to setup a white elephant for your practice that nobody actually uses. Spend more time assessing the features. Setup and install the demo version, and observe how the various features work. Common features of dental management software include Payment Ledger with Payment Entry, Appointment & Revenue Scheduling, Electronic Insurance Claims, and more.

After sales support.

You can send your staff for professional training but sometimes, software being software, it may still misbehave at times. For instance, there may be some bugs that is preventing the software from functioning at a 100%. Bugs in software is common. Therefore, you should expect top notch after sales support even after your staff has completed the training. In the event of downtime, response from the software vendor should be swift and effective. The software should help you to grow and not become an obstacle.

Ease of use and price.

The software should be easy enough for anyone without a technical background to use. Your staff are probably trained in the dental field, and they are not technical geeks. So don’t expect them to perform like IT support staff.

Finally, never base your buying decision based on price. Dental software does not have to be expensive to be a good value, sometimes smaller software companies
are more responsive and have less overhead costs than a large corporation that has to meet investor expectations, and as a result, can offer a better price.

If you want to safeguard your privacy and don’t want others to know about your Internet browsing habits, you should erase Internet browser history. This is especially essential when you are using a shared computer as not wiping off your web history will make it easier for others to know and monitor what you are up to in the online world. So, erasing Internet browser history will remove your personal information or passwords which are saved by mistake.

Though the basic steps to erase Internet browser history are the same, there can be slight variations from one browser to another. Many people believe Firefox to be the best bet that offers the most useful solution to protect your Internet privacy.

To remove your Internet browsing history when you use Firefox, follow these suggestions:

 1. Go to “Tools” and click to get the drop down box.

 2. Opt for “Clear Private Data” from this box.

 3. This selection will erase / delete all your personal data and passwords from the computer.

 4. If you are using any “extensions” and “toolbars” that belong to a third-party such as the Google toolbar or Yahoo search bar, do away with them separately or else they will store their own histories.

If Internet Explorer 7 is what you are comfortable with, erase Internet browser history by means of the following steps:

 1. Click on “Tools” and get a drop down box.

 2. Choose “Internet Options” from there.

 3. A box having a tab marked “General” will open; select the button that reads “Delete” in browsing history.

 4. This will open the “Delete Browsing History ” window. Next, select “Delete All” to eliminate all traces of your Internet browser history.

 5. A final confirmation will be required before the Internet browsing history is erased.

 6. Check the box that says: “Also Delete files and settings stored by add-ons.” After you have finished this chore, click the “Yes” button.

 7. Lastly, make a click on the OK button in “Internet Options” window that you have opened at first.

 8. If your browser has a few third-party “extensions” or “toolbars” installed, you will require to wipe them out independently as these third-party installations save their own histories. So, keeping them installed will mean that someone can chance upon your Internet browser history even when you have complied with the steps listed above.

To remove your AOL (America Online) browser web history, you can go with the following steps:

 1. At the top segment of the AOL window, you will notice a “settings” button.

 2. Click on this button; next choose “preferences”.

 3. Opt for “toolbar and sounds” and then click the “clear history trail now” button. This will clear your Internet browsing history that was stored with AOL (America Online).

These techniques to erase Internet browser history will thwart the chances of other users knowing about your internet browsing habits. However, qualified experts could still find out about the same by investigating some unused files on your hard disk.

You would probably like to download a free PSP theme. Virtually all PSP users do. The PSP has become an incredibly well known, and well loved, machine, and part of that is the flexibility it affords its users. Ipod socks are totally superfluous when you have the freedom to choose the exact way your PSP looks and behaves!

Download A Free PSP Theme Tip 1-Don’t use the main Sony site!
A lot of people never bother to look beyond the main Sony Playstation website when they are looking for themes for their PSP. It is virtually impossible to find a unique PSP Theme if you are downloading it from the same place as everybody else. Although there is no shortage of themes to choose from on the main site, there are a lot of people choosing them. Look somewhere else!

Download A Free PSP Theme Tip 2- Do an internet search
A lot of people will use the main search engines to find out how to download a free PSP theme, but use a bit of clever thinking, and you can get what you want. Instead of doing a direct search engine search for themes, look for PSP communities on the internet? Try to see if you can find some forums or newsgroups. This can be a really useful source of resources, sometimes from members of the forum, and sometimes just from threads. You can find custom-made PSP Themes on these dedicated forums.

Download A Free PSP Theme Tip 3- Don’t use a download!
You can try using one of the simple art programs on your computer to design your own original Theme. Virtually any of the simple art programs will allow you to produce a simple wallpaper, and this should be compatible with your PSP as long as you create it as a JPEG file. Another possibility is to get someone who is good with art to actually design a theme for you. You can find a PSP forum which has some decent Themes, and ask whoever designed the themes you like the best if they will create one for you. Often they will be happy to do it, although they may charge you a little for doing the job.

You can do a lot more with downloading free PSP Themes than just following everybody else with EA games wallpapers etc from the official Sony site. Be original, and you will enjoy your PSP more!

We have worked with schools across the United States, and believe us, you are not the only person asking this question! The answers that we have heard from our customers are as varied as our customers are. The debate over school uniforms is complicated, so we’ve included highlights from both sides for you to consider:

Professional:

Some say that a child in a school uniform is more likely to take school seriously. Putting on the school uniform signals he or she is going to school just like dad dresses up to go to work. Schools report that when students dress in “work clothes” rather than “play clothes” they take a more serious approach to their studies.

Promotes Good Discipline:

Many think that school uniforms help maintain school discipline, decreasing the amount of discipline problems. The argument is that children today are lacking in self-discipline because parents refuse to discipline them. This makes it more difficult on the teacher who has to deal with classes of 25-30 students at a time.

Reduces Fighting and Violence:

Schools report that school uniforms decrease fighting and violence that arrise out of arguments over fashionable clothes. Children invariably tease those who do not have trendy clothes. Those who can’t afford name brand clothes are often sensitive about their clothing. Schools struggling with gang problems report that school uniforms help ease tensions.

Distractions:

Many parents believe that students wearing school uniforms look nicer and that a school uniform policy ensures that children will come to school in appropriate clothing, avoiding distractions such as fads considered to be outlandish or overly revealing. Some students have turned school into an unending fashion show. This disctracts from learning, as some kids spend more time focused on thier clothes than on homework.

Values:

School uniforms stress that individuality and self-expression are not determined by designer clothing or the latest fashion fad.

Low Cost:

School uniforms are a bargain. They are becoming far less expensive than many other clothes. Schools argue that school uniforms are economical, especially compared to designer clothing, and parents agree given school uniform durability. They say school uniforms last longer because they are made for repeated wash and wear. Many schools capitalize on this by starting used school uniform stores or swap meets. Parents can get used school uniforms at discount prices, or just use them as hand-me-downs between siblings.

School Spirit:

Some feel wearing a school uniform helps build school spirit. It instills a feeling of belonging. As the Beach Boys said, “Be true to your school.” Schools report an increase in school pride.

Individuality:

Supressing individuality is the most commonly cited objection to school uniforms. Educators argue that an academic program encouraging students to pursue individual thought is much more important than what they wear. They inhibit creativity and self-expression, forcing students to conform.

Causes Discipline Problems:

Some students reject any rules. Forcing them to wear school uniforms only aggravates their rebelious spirit. They alter their school uniform by tightening, widening, shortening, or lengthening them, and teachers are given the impossible task of policing the students on a daily basis.

Little or No Relationship to Academics:

Opponents insist that their is no credible evidence that school uniforms improve school discipline or promote higher academic acheivement. The principal argument is that some great students are terrible dressers. Dress does not necessarily improve learning. – Article Base

So here you are, a fresh-faced job seeker with a professionally written resume in hand (or on your hard drive, anyway). You are a mixture of emotions: anxious, a little excited, uncertain, maybe even a bit bitter about having to look for a new job in the first place. But most of all, you are hopeful.

You’ve heard about all these great online job posting sites where employers list job after job. You’ve heard that these sites are a buzz with hungry recruiters and hiring managers just waiting for good candidates. So of course you are hopeful. Who wouldn’t be?

It sounds so easy…and so quick.

But after a few frustrating weeks, you soon find out that it is anything but easy or quick. You’ve spent practically whole days combing the Internet, uploading your resume everywhere, replying to posting after posting…and what do you have to show for it? Probably very little.

Now you’re experiencing even more emotions, including anger. And you are ready to blame someone. You probably start with your resume writer because after all you spent good money to see results. And so far, you aren’t seeing results!

Before you clobber your resume writer, however, let me clue you in on a dirty, little secret: Online job posting sites are the most ineffective way to get a job!

Yes, it is true. And the bigger they are, the more ineffective they seem to be. Depending on which report you find, these sites have a less than 4% effectiveness rate. And when you ask most job seekers where they spend the bulk of their job-seeking time, they will tell you that they spend 85-90% of it on the Internet.

I know, I know. These sites are popping up everywhere. And why not? Job seekers are now convinced that they are the answer to their prayers.

It’s sad, really, because although the Internet is definitely a great research tool and has some great resources, it has really taken on a reputation that it cannot live up to, particularly when it comes to the job search.

Why don’t these sites work? The reasons are diverse, but essentially, many companies post for positions that they either end up filling internally or through other connections (referrals, recruiters, etc.). Employers are often bombarded with applications through these postings, and it can take them weeks to get through them all. In many cases, they may even give up looking through these applicants to pursue some other avenue for finding the best candidate.

Listen. At the end of the day, a job search is all about action. And although these sites keep you busy filling in online questionnaires and uploading files, more times than not, your info ends up in some black hole, never to see the light of day again. So all that time you spent equates to nothing more than busy work.

Does that mean I think you shouldn’t bother with these sites? Not necessarily. I think you need to be careful in the ones you choose to spend time with. Find ones that are more local to your area and specialize in your field. Don’t get waste time with too many, and instead use the Internet to research companies, hear about potential openings, link up with old colleagues, and find valuable resources like group job hunting forums. – ArticleBase

How can you tell if a guy likes you or is interested? You noticed him when you were standing and talking with a friend. You think he noticed you, but maybe it was your imagination or just wishful thinking. He looked at you at about the same time you saw him. Your eyes met for just a few seconds, and then you looked away. When you looked back up, he was talking with some other people. Was he watching you as you mingled? Or were you making that up? How can you tell if a guy likes you? Why are guys so hard to read?

Here are five signs that he is interested in you too. If any of the following happens, he is probably trying to get close enough to ask you out:

1. He tells someone

Is he interested? He likes you if he tells a mutual friend that he wants to know more about you, or he asks other people who you are and where you’re from. He is trying to act like he’s “just asking” but his questions indicate more than a casual interest. And when he tells someone that he finds you attractive, he probably knows that it will get back to you. He’s hoping it does.

2. The look

He gives you a look that betrays his calm exterior. Even though he is across the room, “that look” he has says it all. It is sweeping, from your head to your toes, and then his eyes linger on yours. You think you notice the beginning of a tentative smile.

3. The conversation

Does he like you? When he manages to get close enough to you, to ask you questions, he is interested. He appears to be listening and responds to what you say. He’s moving in to the ultimate question, which is: “Are you seeing anyone.” He would only ask this question if he wanted to date you, and he hopes the answer is “No.” Never ever wear a ring in public. When a guy is across the room, he cannot tell which finger it is on and he may assume incorrectly that you are taken. If he doesn’t ask you the question of whether or not you are attached, he may ask someone whom you both know.

4. He appears unexpectedly

He likes you a lot if he shows up out of nowhere. He can only do that if he has been asking people about your schedule, or he has been paying attention to where you are going and at what time. His face may turn red when he sees you. A sudden, “Oh, hi,” is his way of saying, “I don’t want to seem obvious, but I am interested in you.” If you feel the same way, do not act shy. Stop and talk to him.

5. EVERYONE likes you

Is he interested? When you are well liked and a happy person, why wouldn’t he like you? Of course he does. If you don’t have a great life, however, now is your time to start working on one. Take a look at your career possibilities, body image, future, plans, and resources. You may be naturally talented at something, but it won’t matter unless you work on your strengths. Misused or unused talents fade away. School and training do not.

These are the five signs that he is interested and he is on the verge of asking you out. Make it easy for him and be friendly. This is where relationships begin.

Smoking at work will be banned in Wales from 2 April this year and in England & Northern Ireland from 1 July. From those dates onwards, it will be an offence to smoke or to permit smoking in enclosed public spaces and workplaces, including most vehicles used for work. Unlike in Scotland, cars will be covered by the ban as well as vans, HGVs and public transport vehicles.

“Smokefree” vehicles

The law will require any vehicle that is used by more than one person in the course of paid or voluntary work to be “smokefree.” Smokefree vehicles will have to display no smoking signs in the passenger compartment. It will be illegal to smoke in them at any time – not just when there is more than one person in the vehicle. Work vehicles do not have to be smokefree if they are exclusively used by a single driver who never carries passengers in the course of paid or voluntary work. If you manage or operate smokefree vehicles, you will have a legal responsibility to ensure that the required

no-smoking signs are in place. It will be the legal responsibility of anyone who drives, manages or is responsible for safety on a vehicle to prevent people from smoking in it.

Exempt vehicles

Privately owned vehicles will not have to be smokefree – unless they are regularly used to carry passengers on work trips or if business use exceeds private mileage. Drivers can smoke in company-owned or private convertibles, providing that the roof is fully folded down and stowed.

Vehicle policy

The smoking ban regulations state that vehicles must be smokefree at all times if they are used in the course of paid or voluntary work by more than one person, even if those people use the vehicle at different times, or only intermittently. Arval recommends applying a firm no-smoking policy to all company vehicles, covering all users including private as well as business use. This will remove any doubt about compliance with the workplace smoking law, as well as saving vehicle interiors from burns and smoke damage.

Enforcing the law and penalties

Local councils will enforce the new law and will have the power to appoint enforcement officers, such as environmental health officers, trading standards or local community support officers. They will offer information and support to help businesses meet their legal obligations. Drivers or passengers who ignore the smokefree rules will be liable to a fixed penalty of £50. This will be discounted to £30 if the fine is paid within 15 days. If taken to court a maximum fine of £1000 could be applied. Companies should make sure that their employees know that they will be liable for a fine if they are caught smoking in a designated smoke free vehicle. – Articles Base
